The Optimization Overview report provides a summary of optimization opportunities and ways to mitigate risk for public cloud instances. This report is an aggregates the analysis results for all your cloud platforms.

You can display specific cloud services by using the Guest Filter or the Recommendation Filter Menu. See Using the Guest Filter and Using the Recommendation Filter Menu for more details on configuring and using these filters.

Services Included in the Optimization Overview Report

The Optimization Overview report includes your aggregated cloud services that have been analyzed for optimization. Cloud instances that do not have adequate information for recommendation analysis are not included in the Optimization Overview report. For example, this would include guests with incomplete or no benchmark data.

Each Optimization Overview chart, graph, or report contains the various cloud services that you have in your public cloud environments. See Services in the Optimization Summary, Services in the Estimated Cost Impact, and Services in the Detailed Tabular Report for the services that are included in each section of this report.

Optimization opportunities for specific cloud platform services can be found under the Public Cloud menu. See Optimizing Your Public Cloud for details.

Optimization Summary

The Optimization Summary pie chart provides a quick way to visualize groups of instance size/family recommendations for your cloud services.

The pie chart grouping and legend corresponds to the Optimization Type category that is assigned after Densify cloud optimization analysis. For a description of each Optimization Type category, see Optimization Type Color-Coding Summary.

You can hover over any section of the pie chart for a pop-up indicator of the number of services in each category.

You can use the Recommendation Filter Menu to focus on a specific category.

You can use the Guest Filter to narrow the scope of your systems based on organization properties.

The footnote at the bottom of the pie chart indicates the total number of systems analyzed after the Guest and Recommendation Filters have been applied. The percentage indicated in the footnote is the percentage of analyzed systems shown in the pie chart out to the total number of filtered systems.

Services in the Optimization Summary

If you have the following cloud services in your Densify environment, they are automatically optimized and summarized in the Optimization Overview Optimization Summary pie chart:

  • AWS > EC2
  • AWS > RDS
  • AWS > Auto Scaling Groups (each ASG will count as one service; individual in-service EC2s are not counted in the pie chart)
  • Azure > Virtual Machines
  • GCP > Compute Engine

Estimated Cost Impact ($/Month)

This report shows the estimated savings when Densify recommendations are implemented. The estimated cost impact is based on the estimated current cost minus the recommendation cost, with the predicted uptime taken into account.

The scope of the services included in this report is defined by the Recommendation Filter Menu and the Guest Filter, therefore the displayed costs are determined based on the services that are displayed, based on your filter settings. The cost tiles show:

  • Current Estimated Monthly Cost—A cumulative, estimated cost of your current cloud services with predicted uptime taken into account.
  • Estimated Monthly Savings—The amount that you can save if the recommendations are implemented. This is the estimated current monthly cost minus the recommendation monthly cost. The percentage of estimated monthly savings out of the current estimated monthly cost is also displayed.
  • Upsize Costs—The cost to upsize or upscale your services that are at risk. This cost will offset the total savings indicated on the Estimated Monthly Savings tile. In essence, the amount in this tile includes costs associated with systems identified with Overall Status = "Identified Risk".

A bi-directional bar chart displays estimated savings associated with implementing the recommendations for the in-scope systems:

  • Positive savings are displayed for terminate, modernize, and modernize to optimal family recommendations.
  • Positive savings are displayed for downscale, downsize, and downsize to optimal family recommendations.
  • Negative savings are typically displayed for upscale, upsize, and upsize to optimal family recommendations (more resource are required to improve systems identified as risks).
  • Hover over any bar in the chart for a pop-up indicator of the amount of savings for the recommendation group.
  • The colors of the graph bars correspond to the Optimization Type color-code, see Optimization Type Color-Coding Summary.

Services in the Estimated Cost Impact

If you have any of the following cloud services in your Densify environment, they are automatically optimized and summarized in the Optimization Overview Estimated Cost Impact bar chart:

  • AWS > EC2
  • AWS > RDS
  • AWS > Auto Scaling Groups (cost is calculated for each ASG service; individual in-service EC2s belonging to ASGs are not counted in the cost calculations)
  • Azure > Virtual Machines
  • GCP > Compute Engine

Detailed Tabular Report

To learn more watch the video:

The Optimization Overview detailed tabular report summarizes optimization opportunities for compute and database services (see Services in the Detailed Tabular Report). This tabular report highlights potential saving opportunities or risk mitigation options associated with optimizing services in your public cloud. See the table below for the column descriptions.

A footnote below the table indicates that only compute and database instances are included. The estimated cost calculations are based on the per instance cost and the predicted uptime for each instance.

Table: Optimization Overview Detailed Tabular Report Columns

Component / Column Name

Description

Count

The number of instances listed in the Count column is a hyperlink that takes you to the Instance Optimization Details page for the selected instance group. For more information on this page, see Understanding the Instance Optimization Details Report.

Overall Status

Identifies the overall status of the optimization results based on Optimization Type and $ Savings/Month:

Optimal

These instance types are currently optimal. The Optimization type is just right and there are no costs savings for this group.

Identified Risk

These instance types are at risk. This status occurs when the savings amount is less than $0 (i.e. you need to spend money to mitigate risk).

Identified Risk status is also indicated when the savings amount is $0, but optimization type is upscale, upsize, or upsize to optimal family. This situation occurs when services are inactive, however, they will need to be upscaled or upsized to mitigate risk when they resume activity.

Savings Opportunity

These instance types can provide saving opportunities that greater than $0.

Savings opportunity status is also indicated when the savings amount is $0, but optimization type is terminate, modernize, modernize to optimal family, downscale, downsize, or downsize to optimal family. This situation occurs when services are inactive, but have a recommendation of terminate, modernize, downsize or downscale when they resume activity to save money.

Optimization Type

The recommended action for the group of instances. See Optimization Type Color-Coding Summary for a description of each recommendation.

Catalog Instance

Based on the audits and recommendation analysis, the current and recommended catalog instances are listed.

Estimated Cost

The estimated cost is the aggregate cost of the services in scope, as indicated by the service Count of each row. The estimated cost (both current and recommended) takes into account uptime and does not assume systems are running all the time.

Cost Impact

  • $ Savings/Month
  • % Savings

If the recommendations are implemented, the $ Savings/Month is calculated as the current estimated cost minus the recommended estimated cost. The % Savings is the percentage of your current cost that can be saved, each month, by optimizing your instances (i.e. the aggregated $ Savings/Month divided by Current Cost).

Effort

[High|Medium|Low|None]

This column describes the effort required to investigate and implement the Densify recommendations. The displayed group effort is an average of all the calculated efforts for each instance (or service) in the group. Effort for each instance is calculated by rule-driven analytics based on factors (such as family change, storage change, data quality checks, feature changes, etc.) that can be configured in the policy settings and rule set which captures best practices.

Footnote

A footnote at the bottom of the tabular report indicates that only compute and database instances are included in this report. See Services in the Detailed Tabular Report for the specific cloud services included in this report.
